AI Usage Disclosure
A personal word from Steve Larsen, Founder
I’ll be direct: I spent years with serious misgivings about artificial intelligence. As a voice actor and audiobook narrator I have firsthand knowledge of the damage AI has caused in those industries. No abstraction here — my misgivings were based in real, tangible, negative experiences.
But the scale of what needed doing — potentially thousands of books, with who knows how many readers waiting. I wanted our efforts to be distinctly human. I also believed that distinctly human effort was going to require powerful tools. The question was not whether to use AI, but how — and our answer was temperance.
As I pondered, wrestled, and prayed about this, my friend Ryan Kaufman came to mind. Ryan is a mature Christian, a language scholar with an MDiv from Reformed Theological Seminary, and a technological savant whose misgivings about AI mirror my own — but are more informed, as he understands things from a technological viewpoint.
So I approached Ryan with the concept of Puritan Publishing, told him about my idea to modernize old Christian books currently in the public domain, gave him an idea of the scale, and asked him if he’d like to join me. By God’s grace, he said yes.
Together we wrestled through the ethics of using AI as a tool in service of our human effort. By God’s Providence, we are friends with, students of, and attend the same church as Dr. James Anderson — a Christian philosopher and ethicist who just so happens to hold a PhD in computer science. Dr. Anderson was gracious, listened carefully, and offered wise counsel that was both confirming and challenging.
Ryan then built something remarkable — a layered system that:
- Preserves the author’s original message, argument, and intent
- Protects the theological content from any AI influence or alteration
Makes the tone understandable and relatable to today’s reader - Replaces archaic language with modern equivalents
- Every modernized text is then carefully edited and compared side-by-side with the original by human eyes — line by line, passage by passage — before publication.
If you are an AI skeptic — we honor that.
We only ask that if you’re willing, you look at the side-by-side comparisons we provide with each modernized title. We believe you’ll see our temperance and deliberate caution on full display.
Edited by humans. The theology is the author’s own.
