1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Puritan Publishing (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects information about you when you visit our website Puritan Publishing (https://puritanpublishing.com), including through our Audiobookshelf server (also referred to as the “web player” or the “audio player” or other similar term) at https://audio.puritanpublishing.com, create an account, or purchase products from us.

2. Information We Collect

When you visit our site, create an account, or place an order, we will or may collect:

  • Account information: name, email address, billing and shipping address, and password (encrypted).
  • Order information: products purchased, payment method (processed by our payment processor — we do not store full credit card numbers), and order history.
  • Technical information: IP address, browser type, device information, and cookies used for site functionality and analytics.
  • Communications: any information you provide when contacting customer support.
3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Process and fulfill orders, including provisioning access to digital audiobook/ebook content.
  • Create and maintain your customer account.
  • Communicate with you about your orders, account, or support requests.
  • Improve our website and product offerings.
  • Comply with legal obligations.
4. Digital Content Delivery and Third-Party Syncing

Our audiobook and ebook content is delivered in part through an Audiobookshelf server integration, hosted at https://audio.puritanpublishing.com. To provide you with access to purchased audiobook and ebook content, the email address associated with your online account is automatically synced with our Audiobookshelf server in order to create and manage your access credentials.

The Audiobookshelf server operates as an extension of our store for the sole purpose of delivering the audiobook content you have purchased, and does not maintain a separate privacy policy or set of terms. Your use of the Audiobookshelf player is governed by this Privacy Policy and our Account Terms in full.

5. Cookies

Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to operate shopping cart functionality, keep you logged into your account, and understand how visitors use our site. You can disable cookies through your browser settings, though this may affect site functionality, including your ability to check out or access purchased content.

6. Sharing Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information with:

  • Service providers who help us operate our store, process payments, deliver digital content (including our Audiobookshelf server), or provide customer support.
  • Legal authorities, where required by law, subpoena, or to protect our legal rights.
7. Data Retention

We retain your account and order information for as long as your account remains active, or as needed to comply with our legal and tax obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you, or to object to certain uses of it. To exercise these rights, please contact us using the information below.

9. California Privacy Rights

If you are a California resident, you have certain rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), including the right to:

  • Know what personal information we have collected about you and how it has been used and disclosed.
  • Delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
  • Correct inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
  • Opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of your personal information. We currently do not sell or share your personal information with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising.
  • Non-discrimination for exercising any of these rights.
  • We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of minors under 16 years of age.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the information in Section 14. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling your request.

10. EU/UK Data Subject Rights (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and equivalent UK data protection law give you certain additional rights over your personal data.

Data Controller. Puritan Publishing is the controller of your personal data for purposes of this Privacy Policy.

Legal basis for processing. We process your personal data on the following legal bases:

  • Performance of a contract — to process and fulfill your orders, create your account, and provide access to purchased content via our Audiobookshelf server.
  • Legitimate interests — to maintain and improve our website and services, prevent fraud, and respond to support requests.
  • Consent — for optional cookies/analytics and any marketing communications, where applicable. You may withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legal obligation — where we are required to retain or disclose information to comply with the law (e.g., tax records).

Your rights. Subject to certain conditions and exceptions under applicable law, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Request erasure of your data (“right to be forgotten”).
  • Restrict or object to certain processing of your data.
  • Receive a copy of your data in a portable format.
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent.
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.

International data transfers. We are based in the United States, and your personal data — including data associated with your Audiobookshelf access — is processed and stored on servers located in the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for the transfer of personal data from the EEA/UK to the United States.

Cookies. Where required by applicable law, we will request your consent before placing non-essential cookies (such as analytics or marketing cookies) on your device. You can manage your cookie preferences through the cookie banner/settings on our website, or through your browser settings.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the information in Section 13.

11. Security Measures

We take reasonable measures to protect your personal information, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.

We use the SSL/HTTPS protocol throughout our site. This encrypts our user communications with the servers so that personally identifiable information is not captured/hijacked by third parties without authorization.

In case of a data breach, system administrators will immediately take all needed steps to ensure system integrity, will contact affected users and will attempt to reset passwords if needed.

12. Children’s Privacy

Our products and services are not directed to children under 13 (or under 16, for purposes of California and EU data protection law), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under these ages. Children should only visit our website with their parent or guardian’s permission and supervision.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last Updated” date.
